Millennials in the Workplace.

The modern workplace has recently witnessed a number of changes. However, it can be argued that there is none more profound than how demographics are shifting. It is currently estimated that the millennial workforce generation (loosely defined as being those born after 1982 and before 2004) comprises approximately 35 per cent. However, this number is expected to increase to an overwhelming 75 per cent by the year 2025 (1). As these workers generally follow exceedingly different rules and desires when compared to previous generations, the challenge facing employers now is knowing how to cater to their needs. Let us take a look at what the average millennial is looking for before moving on to how these issues can be addressed by business owners and management teams.

A Demanding Workforce?

Firstly, it is important for millennials to feel empowered and remain certain of their talents. They are not afraid to change jobs, with 35 percent of workers reporting they had changed jobs in the last year (2), or even to relocate if their desires are not addressed. This has less to do with entitlement and is caused more by a sense of confidence in their skill sets. These workers want to feel fulfilled in their day-to-day experiences and wish to serve a tangible purpose. Generic targets and anonymous roles will not meet these expectations.

Besides clarified objectives, they also want to work in a flexible, productive environment. Thus, modern technologies will often come into play. Some examples of this include:

  • Flexible working hours.
  • Meeting rooms and desks equipped with wireless devices.
  • Excellent networking capabilities (including remote working).
  • BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) possibilities.

Studies have shown that in regards to the millennial workforce, the optimal engagement boost occurs when employees spend 60 to 80 percent of their time – or 3 to 4 days a week – working remotely (2).

Technological gadgetry and remote working opportunities are not the only concern millennials have in the workplace. They also want clear routes of communication on all levels; particularly when relating to management. Another interesting point to make is that such meetings should be notably less formal when compared to traditional top-down talks. Now they are likely to consist of back-room chats and similar casual forms of comms. Millennials believe that these methods will help to clearly define their individual roles and goals. While they do indeed value stability, this should never arise by sacrificing flexible networking methods.

The Challenges Facing Management!

Addressing these employment requirements can be slightly daunting and management might not be aware of the steps that need to be taken. Adopting a proactive stance is one of the best ways to address the needs of millennials in the workplace. Some expert suggestions include (3):

  • Providing opportunities for professional development.
  • Offering flexible hours so that a balance between work and personal life can be achieved.
  • Collaborative goal setting and rewarding those who meet targets.
  • Encouraging activities away from the office such as nights out and company away days.
  • Taking on the role of a mentor as opposed to a traditional “boss”.

Having said this, challenges involving technological integration will also need to be addressed. It therefore stands to reason that a growing number of organisations are leveraging the possibilities offered by TwistedPair. Some innovative examples include (but are not limited to):

  • Fully integrated meeting rooms and collaborative spaces with room booking.
  • Bespoke video conferencing solutions.
